Gallbladder and Biliary Surgery

This field ranges from gallstones and cholecystitis to common bile duct stones, bile duct injuries/strictures and biliary cancers.

The gallbladder and bile ducts are not the same

The gallbladder stores bile, while the biliary tree carries bile from the liver to the intestine. Gallbladder stones and common bile duct stones are therefore different conditions, as are gallbladder cancer and cholangiocarcinoma.

Approach

Relationship between surgery and endoscopy

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure. ERCP is an endoscopic procedure and may be coordinated with surgery for problems such as bile duct stones or selected bile leaks.
