Liver Surgery

Liver Surgery

Liver surgery includes surgical assessment of primary liver cancers, liver metastases and selected cystic, benign or parasitic liver diseases.

Scope of liver surgery

The liver can be affected by tumors that start in the liver as well as metastases from other organs. Hydatid disease and selected benign lesions can also require surgical assessment.

Approach

How is a surgical decision made?

The presence of a liver lesion does not automatically mean surgery. Disease type, lesion number and location, vascular/biliary relationships, liver function and the future liver remnant are assessed together.
