Liver metastases are cancers that have spread to the liver from another organ.
What is this condition?
The liver is a common site of spread for several cancers; colorectal liver metastases are a particularly important group.
Signs and symptoms
Metastases may be detected on surveillance imaging without symptoms. Greater liver involvement can cause abdominal discomfort, appetite loss or weight loss.
Diagnostic assessment
Assessment considers the primary cancer, distribution within the liver, vascular/biliary relationships, disease outside the liver and overall health.
General treatment framework
Systemic therapy, surgical resection, ablation and selected liver-directed approaches may be combined in a multidisciplinary plan.
Role of surgery
Surgery may be considered when relevant liver disease can be treated while preserving enough functioning liver.
