Pancreatic Surgery

Pancreatic Surgery

Pancreatic surgery includes surgical assessment of pancreatic cancer, cystic neoplasms such as IPMN and selected complications of pancreatitis.

Why do pancreatic diseases require focused assessment?

The pancreas lies close to major vessels, the bile ducts and duodenum. Whether disease is in the head, body or tail directly affects the operation that may be considered.

Approach

Main surgical procedures

A Whipple procedure may be used for pancreatic head and periampullary tumors; distal pancreatectomy is used for selected body/tail lesions, with other resections considered in specific situations.
