Biliary cysts are rare disorders characterized by cystic dilatation of the bile ducts.
What is this condition?
Although often called choledochal cysts, dilatation can involve different parts of the biliary tree.
Signs and symptoms
Abdominal pain, jaundice, nausea/vomiting, itching or cholangitis may occur.
Diagnostic assessment
Ultrasound, CT and especially MRCP are used to assess biliary anatomy.
General treatment framework
Treatment varies by anatomical type. The 2023 Cerrahpaşa series reports complete cyst excision with Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy as a common approach for type I cysts.
Role of surgery
Surgery aims to remove the abnormal segment and restore bile flow through safe reconstruction.
