A pancreatic pseudocyst is an encapsulated fluid collection that most often develops after pancreatitis.
What is this condition?
It is not a true epithelial-lined cyst; it forms from organized pancreatic fluid.
Signs and symptoms
Pain, early satiety, nausea or compression symptoms may occur; infection, bleeding or rupture are serious complications.
Diagnostic assessment
CT, MRI and endoscopic ultrasound assess size, wall maturity, contents and adjacent anatomy.
General treatment framework
Some asymptomatic pseudocysts can be observed; endoscopic, percutaneous or surgical drainage is selected when intervention is needed.
Role of surgery
Surgical drainage in selected patients may include internal drainage such as cystogastrostomy.
